Site News — Pete @ 12:33 pm

I try to avoid writing about writing on the site, but sometimes it’s unavoidable.

My apologies for the scarcity of posting lately. Both work and life have been busier than usual, leaving me with little time and even less motivation for posting.

I will try to get back on a more regular schedule in the weeks ahead.

Downtime this weekend

Site News — Pete @ 9:14 pm

UPDATE: The new drive is installed and happy. The process ended up taking about half an hour, most of which was spent trying to figure out how to get stupid power cables to stretch to all the different stuff inside the box.

***

I don’t know exactly when it’s going to happen, but there will be some downtime for the site this weekend.

A shiny new 320GB drive arrived in the mail today, so I’ll be taking the server that runs this site down to do the install. While there will be some data migration taking place once the hardware is back up and running, none of it involves the site, so the outage should be fairly brief.

The addition of this drive will take me up to just over half a terabyte of storage in this box. Every time I’ve bought a new drive in the past, I have said something along the lines of “I’ll never fill this up!” Then, six months later, I’m shocked to discover that the drive is almost full. Consequently, I’m making no predictions about how long this one will last me.

Posting will be light over the next few days, on account of I will be heading out for the holidays. There may also be some downtime—I have a new battery backup that needs to be installed.

In the meantime, I’m working on a couple of year-end music round-ups which I’ll be posting over the course of next week.

Have a good Christmas/Hanukkah/Festivus/weekend.

Stuff might look strange

Site News — Pete @ 12:18 pm

I’m screwing around with the skins right now, so the site may occasionally look different/weird. Hopefully shouldn’t last too long, though.

In the meantime, thanks for your patience.

UPDATE: Okay, all done. No big changes—there was an update to the theme that I use, but no significant changes on the front-end. It just took me a few minutes to change the header image, get the sidebar in order, etc.

Uh, huh huh huh, uh huh huh

Site News — Pete @ 10:29 pm

Apparently, someone managed to find my site using the search term “boobtv”. I think that’s pretty hilarious.

Whoever you are, if you’re still reading, I’m sorry if it’s a disappointment.

Before the Percocet kicks in…

Site News — Pete @ 7:36 am

UPDATE: It turned out to be Vicodin, not Percocet. The oral surgeon was pretty cool, and aside from the fact that novocaine injections require a needle, everything went fine.

I am off to the dentist at noon today to have two of my wisdom teeth removed. As a result, one of two thing may happen:

  1. Posts will be thin the next few days while I recover.
  2. Posts may be more interesting the next few days due to the painkillers I’ll be on.

Either way, considered yourself warned.

In other news, I noticed yesterday that not only have I just passed 400 posts, but this blog will celebrate its second birthday on October 17. The 17th is actually more of an “observed” birthday—the blog was up for a few months before 10/04 in a different CMS (the name of which escapes me) that ran on a Windows box, but there wasn’t enough content to worry about getting the database imported into the old NucleusCMS instance. As a result, I don’t know the exact date. Oh well.

I don’t really have anything to say specifically for the occasion, other than “Yay, me,” and thank you to everyone who visits the site. It’s generally a bad idea to spend too much time writing about writing, I think.

Considering that this site began simply as a way for me to learn Apache, PHP, Mysql, etc., I’d say it has turned out fairly well and leave it at that.

Light posting this week

Site News — Pete @ 7:21 am

I have family visiting from out-of-town this week, so posts will most likely be light to non-existent through the weekend.

If there is nothing new to read here, I would recommend any of the fine site on the “Links” list to the right. Alternately, you could take this opportunity to go outside and play.

DNS joy and site down-time

Site News — Pete @ 7:20 am

After nearly a year of having the same IP address, it would seem that Time Warner Cable finally decided to issue me a new one sometime over night.

I have initiated the necessary DNS changes, but they will take some time to propagate. If you are reading this post, then the new record has already made it to your local DNS server and there is nothing to worry about. However, if you have had trouble reaching the site in the last twelve hours, that’s the reason.

Hopefully the cable company hasn’t changed to a policy of shorter lease periods, but I guess I’ll find that out soon enough.

Turn and face the strange ch-ch-changes

Site News — Pete @ 7:15 am

After screwing around with WordPress in the background for a week or two, I have decided to  make the change on the front end.  Nucleus, the CMS that the site was previously running on was okay, but WordPress has a lot more cool features, and seems to be under more active development.

Also, I can now have the letters “html” in my post without generating MySQL errors.  w00t!

There is obviously still some work to do, though.  I can’t guarantee that there won’t be the occasional errors as I tinker around with stuff, so please bear with me.  Any comments or suggestions are, as always, welcome.

In the meantime, I will be trying to keep to my more or less normal posting schedule.

Lack of links

Site News — Pete @ 6:38 pm

Observant visitors to this site may have noticed a distanct absence of hyperlinks from posts over the last few weeks.

I’m still poking around to figure out exactly what is causing the problem, but any posts that contain a hyperlink generate a nasty Mysql error and fail to insert into the database. It’s rather annoying, let me tell you what.

Best guess is that it’s fall out from an early summer power surge that pooched up a couple of the tables. However, various repair-tables utilities have failed to turn up anything obvious, and I’m left with sorting through records one-by-one to try to spot the problem

In the meantime, I am left with not being able to directly link to other sites from within posts. When possible, though, I will do what I can to direct you to the site in question. Sorry for the trouble.
